Some kids hear with two ears

There is more than one way to hear, and all of them are okay.

Some kids hear with one ear

Some kids use hearing aids

Some kids use cochlear implants

Some kids use sign languge

What is a cochlear implant?

A cochlear implant is a special device that helps some people hear sounds in a different way.

It doesn’t fix your ears — it helps your brain understand sound.

Some kids call it a robot ear, super ear, magic ear or even give it their own special name. You can call it whatever sounds good to you!

Is it a superpower?

We think so 😄

A cochlear implant can help you:

  • hear voices and sounds you couldn’t hear before

  • listen better at school

  • hear people when there is lots of noise

  • use technology like microphones, TVs, and phones

Your brain works extra hard to make sense of sound — and that’s pretty amazing.

Different is powerful

Having a cochlear implant means your ears work differently and different is powerful!

Everyone is different.

Some people wear glasses.
Some people use wheelchairs.
Some people wear hearing aids.
Some people have cochlear implants.

Being different doesn’t mean you can’t do big things.

Lots of people who hear differently grow up to become:

  • athletes

  • musicians

  • Actors

  • artists

  • teachers

  • leaders

Some use cochlear implants.
Some use hearing aids.
Some use sign language.
Some don’t use devices at all.

Their difference didn’t stop them. And yours won’t either.

You can:

  • learn

  • play

  • create

  • explore

  • make friends

  • dream big

Your cochlear implant (or hearing device) is just one part of who you are.

Your difference isn’t something that holds you back. It’s something that makes you, you.

It’s okay to feel lots of feelings

Sometimes you might feel:

  • proud

  • curious

  • shy

  • annoyed

  • tired of listening

  • or like you don’t want to talk about it

All of those feelings are okay. You can talk about your hearing when you want to and take a break when you don’t.

Remember this - You are clever, brave and strong and hearing differently is just one part of who you are.
